Not sure which type of leader you are? Here’s a hit list for these two types of leaders:
Controlling Leaders:
- Tend to lead from a place of position (ex: “Because I’m the boss and I say so”)
- Relate to their teams from a position of authority
- Often intimidate or threaten their team to get them to comply with demands
- Cultivate a culture of survival and “just making it to Friday” mentality among their team
- Experience low productivity because their team is just doing what they have to in order to get by and keep their job. They aren’t inclined to do anything extra for these types of leaders
Connecting Leaders:
- Lead from a place of collaboration and achieving success for the team, not just for themselves
- Foster a family-like culture
- Have a strong relationship with each of their team members
- Are trusted and respected by their team members, who are willing to go the extra mile for these types of leaders
- Tend to have teams who have a sense of belonging and purpose
Where do you fall on that spectrum?
